Local Natives - Cards and Quarters

I had the pleasure of seeing Local Natives open for Edward Sharpe and Fool’s Gold a while back. You may remember this post about it. Although I was not familiar about them at the time, they’re live show got me looking them up the next morning. On November 2nd the gang is releasing their first debut album Gorilla Manor physically in the UK and internationally over the internet. Aside from their spot on harmonies, what really gets me about this band are their complex instrumentals. “Cards and Quarters,” for instance, plays off a simple, trance-inducing drum cadence with a flourish of different instruments that grow out of it. Note the echoed guitar and piano riffs and the subtle, bouncing bass line that comes in at just the right moments. If you missed these guys the first time around, they’re touring quite heavily right now. Bay Area residents can check them out at Slims on November 4th!
