Andrew Bird - Sectionate City

Earlier this month the whistling violinist snuck a new EP called Fitz and the Dizzy Spells on to shelves. For the most part it’s a re-imagining of songs from January’s masterpiece Noble Beast, except the title track which is repeated pretty much note for note - if it was re-recorded at all. A particular favorite of mine is “Sectionate City,” which is a borrowed title from an instrumental on Soldier On, but a completely different tune altogether. While I was blown away as usual by his signature whistles and beautifully plucked and bowed violin, it was the slow groove that captured me on first listen. At around the 5 minute mark the song slowly dissipates, ending in a hip-hoppian sample of someone dialing through radio stations. Classic!
