    St. Vincent - Bicycle

The brilliantly composed songs from St. Vincent’s Actor have entertained my ears for weeks now, so you can imagine how excited I was to discover this B-side from her Actor Out Of Work 7” entitled “Bicycle.” While the tone of this tune is a bit blue with opening lyrics “You stole my bicycle / So I had to walk twenty city blocks in the rain,” it is - like all the songs on the new album - a fine piece of instrumental work featuring looping woodwinds, dark classical piano and a heavy, minimal beat at its core. Somehow Annie Clark manages to fit these amazing sounds into each piece without sounding overkill, which also lets her voice stay in the foreground. Not sure about you guys, but I’d have to say this album is in my top ten for 2009 so far.
