Four Tet - Angel Echoes (Video)

Just saw this video over at Chocolate Bobka and it got me that much more excited to finally see Four Tet later this week during Noise Pop fest! Ray Concepcion goes 3D on us in this intimate live shoot at a recent show at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC.

NP 2K10: A Mix From EOTB
Yikes. Another mix right? Well don’t count that last one. Not my fault my city started a mixtape club! As for a mix that highlights acts from San Francisco’s upcoming Noise Pop festival? Well that’s been on my calendar for some time now. Why? Well I work for Noise Pop and have been immersed in so much music from the lineup that I felt this mix was absolutely necessary. It’s something for the archives - a way for me to make sense of this long project. Hell, it’s a way to get pumped for the shows! It all started with watching the lineup slowly fill out to the 100+ bands there are now. I even had the chance to suggest some of them myself! Although full credit goes to our awesome booking agent who made it actually happen.
This mix puts the spotlight on some of the best this festival has to offer. Hopefully you find a band on here that you never would have considered going to see…and you go see them. And if I can’t get that out of you, then at least let me know this mix made you smile. Hope to see you locals out at the festival!

    Kites Sail High - Untitled

I found some more San Francisco magic last week via one of my new favorite Tumblr’s Don’t Die Wondering. Kites Sail High is a series of experimental instrumental tracks all decorated in loops of various worldly sounds. The result is an EP called Alone which has been offered up on their Myspace. The lead off tune “Untitled” is the most structural of the songs - void of much melody, say for some organ notes that float above the thick, crunchy beat. It’s totally a casual head bobber though. As the songs progress through the EP they slowly slip into the abstract. The tune “Action Figures,” a mostly kalimba-driven piece, could easily be the soundtrack for a video installation in an art museum. These songs might not be the jams you cruise the freeway with, but they will take you places.

Active Child - Body Heat (So Far Away)

Loving this new “slow banger” from the Bon Iver of the synths, Active Child - known casually as Pat Grossi from Los Angeles. Maybe this tune can work itself onto some of your Valentine’s mixes…eh…although the subject matter would be more ideal for people with long distance relationships - your call though. Perhaps you remember my recent coverage of this guy not too long ago? Check it out in case you missed it! With the strong support of sites like Transparent and Pitchfork, he’s smooth sailing on the road to indie greatness.
